Faith Formation Parent Letter for 2019-2020 Year

Greetings in Our Lord Jesus Christ!

I pray your summer has been joyful and relaxing! This letter finds us on the heels of the 2019-2020 Faith Formation year at St. Maximilian Kolbe.  I am confident the Lord has great plans for us this year! At the close of last year our program turned inward to spend time really looking at our  strengths and weaknesses and to pray for direction to develop a truly inspired year of formation and growth. After time and collaboration with many, a snapshot of our program year  is listed below;

K and 1st Grades: …” "the church of the home" remains the one place where children can receive an authentic catechesis. There cannot be too great an effort on the part of Christian parents to prepare for this ministry of being their own children's catechists and to carry it out with tireless zeal”.-St. John Paul II .    We are thrilled to start an inhome program for our youth and their family.  We will meet as a large group in St. Martha Hall the 2nd Sunday of each month,  between the masses or after the 10:30 Mass, your choice. At that time, we will learn our faith together and I will give you all the materials you will need for the next 3 weeks of your home study.  You will be placed in a family small group so you will never feel you are all on your own. I will also be available to you to help you walk through the process. This is not only an inhome program but a community program. We are using a program called; A Family of Faith: Catechesis for the Whole Family, from Sophia Institute. We understand this to be a big change in what we have done in the past.  We are confident after you spend the first lesson learning and praying with your children, you will be as excited as we are about this transition!

2nd-5th Grades: These grades will continue with the Finding God series that we started last year. We have had great feedback on the multisensory learning this program offers: Art Work, Music, Guided Meditation, Videos and more. Employing the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Finding God  provides all the tools to engage the whole child—mind, heart, and soul—uniquely guiding children to practice prayer and reflection, to explore Scripture, and to find God in all things. Amen! Note-if you would like to do an in home study at this level, instead of Wednesday night classes, you are most welcome to do so. The Family of Faith Series is excellent-please let me know if you are interested.

6th Grade:  We are adding Quick Catholic Lessons with Fr. Mike Schmitz to our program year. Ascension Press has taken Fr. Schmitz’s most popular YouTube videos and created programming around them. Fr. Mike Schmitz is a dynamic priest in the Duluth diocese that really brings the truths of our faith to an energetic and relatable level.  If you want a jump start on this, google the videos. It just takes one and most are hooked!

7th and 8th Grade: We will be using a program through Formed called YDisciple. Besides incredible content, another great asset is that  you, as parents, will have access to all the videos and materials we cover. You will know exactly what your children are learning and can watch the videos too. This connection, I pray, will allow for some wonderful connection and conversation between you and your children.

9th and 10th Grades: LifeTeen  has spent the last 2 years creating a dynamic, new Confirmation program called Purpose and this year is  our year! I truly believe with this program that we will see immense growth in content and communication as we start preparation for Confirmation.  Purpose is more than just a resource. It is a whole new approach to sacramental preparation and one we cannot wait to dig into! We have added requirements for each class that will be outside of class time to offer great opportunity for you and your child to learn together. Concrete  details regarding Confirmation Preparation will be discussed at the parent meeting.

Post Confirmation:  We always say Confirmation is not graduation, but we have never offered anything tangible for kids to keep discovering and unwrapping their faith.  It is imperative that we continue to deepen our relationship with the Lord, no matter what our age. This upcoming formation year, we will be starting a program called, The Activated Disciple by Jeff Cavins. The Activated Disciple teaches you how to imitate God, so you can become an instrument for him to transform the world. Meeting days, times and locations will be decided by those who choose to engage.  It is going to be Awesome!

After reading this letter, I hope you feel the same as we do--we have a very dynamic, exciting program year ahead!  Please note the registration deadline for the formation year. You can register online or send your information into the parish office.

New this year is a 50% discount for those who jump into the fun! If you want to be inspired and grow personally in your faith, please consider joining our incredible Catechist Team! We are not necessarily looking for “teachers” we are looking for small group leaders for our weekly small groups.  The conversation and growth in our small groups is incredible. I wonder if you would like to be a part of it?

One more thing to note.  We have an updated parish website which now includes a google calendar under the Faith Formation Events tab. Get familiar with it, I believe this will be extremely helpful for us all this upcoming year.

Please note the dates listed below for our  parent meetings and registration. These meetings are vital and allow time  to discuss our year in greater detail. Your attendance is needed. If you have any questions about our upcoming faith year or anything else that you would like to discuss before our meetings, please contact me.  I always like to hear from you! Enjoy summer and all the Lord has to offer you each day!
